Tom and I were recently course marshals for one of the legs of Amgen. After perusing the three pages of glossary in the *37* page handbook about how to be a good course marshal (mostly summed up thus: don't show up drunk, don't drink on the job and be nice to everyone, especially the local police because they ARE the boss of you), I actually know what you mean. And, having seen the entire race pass by in just a few seconds, I kind of get it, too.
That was cool of you and Tom to be course marshals.
I've never seen a professional race in person but there's something about seeing only 20 seconds of it as the group zips by that makes watching it on TV more appealing.
